Our OPAL Journey: Outdoor Play and Learning

We are excited to share that Ditton Junior School has begun its OPAL journey.
OPAL stands for Outdoor Play and Learning. It is a nationally recognised programme that helps schools improve the quality of play for every child.
Playtimes are a significant part of the school day, and through OPAL we want to make this time as rich, inclusive, creative and enjoyable as possible for all pupils. The OPAL Primary Programme is a mentor-supported school improvement programme focused on making long-term, sustainable improvements to play. (Outdoor Play and Learning)
At Ditton, we believe that play is not simply a break from learning — it is an important part of how children learn and grow.
Through high-quality play, children develop confidence, imagination, resilience, independence, teamwork and problem-solving skills. They learn how to assess risk, make decisions, negotiate with others and enjoy being active outdoors.
As we begin this journey, pupils and families will start to see changes to the way our outdoor spaces are used. Over time, we hope to introduce a wider range of play opportunities, resources and experiences, so that children can choose, create, explore and lead their own play in exciting and meaningful ways.
This is very much a journey, and we are at the beginning.
We will be listening to our pupils, working with staff, involving families and developing our school environment step by step. Some changes may be small at first, while others will grow over time as our confidence, resources and ideas develop.
Our aim is simple: for every child at Ditton Junior School to experience happy, active, imaginative and inclusive playtimes every day.
We look forward to sharing our progress with you and inviting our whole school community to be part of this exciting development.
