Year 6 Classes

In Year 6, pupils experience a broad and ambitious curriculum that builds on everything they have learned throughout their time at primary school. Carefully planned teaching helps pupils deepen their knowledge, make connections between different areas of learning and develop the confidence to apply what they know more independently.

As pupils prepare for the next stage of their education, we place a strong focus on developing the skills they will need to thrive at secondary school. This includes becoming increasingly independent, organised and resilient, learning to manage challenges, think critically, communicate effectively and take greater responsibility for their own learning. Regular retrieval practice also helps pupils strengthen their long-term memory and become confident, reflective and self-motivated learners.

Alongside their academic development, we support pupils to grow in confidence, curiosity and emotional resilience, ensuring they are well prepared both academically and personally for the opportunities and challenges of secondary school.

Our curriculum continues to promote a positive learning culture and growth mindset, encouraging pupils to approach challenges with maturity, determination and increasingly sophisticated thinking. Children are supported to develop their knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all subject areas, fostering a genuine love of learning and a readiness for the next stage of their education. 

In Year 6, pupils study a broad and balanced range of curriculum content, exploring a wide variety of engaging and meaningful focussed studies. These include: 

• History: Pupils explore the importance of the census and how it helps us understand changes in population, society and living conditions over time. They learn how historical records are used to build a picture of the past and why this information remains valuable today. 

• Geography: Children investigate population patterns by studying birth and death rates. They compare data from different countries and time periods to understand how populations change and what influences these changes, such as healthcare, living conditions and economic development. 

• English: Pupils develop their reading, writing and discussion skills through a rich selection of high‑quality texts. They study Goodnight Mister Tom and The Arrival, exploring themes such as friendship, resilience, migration and belonging. Throughout the year, they also read Journey to the River Sea, The London Eye Mystery and Hidden Figures, using these texts to inspire thoughtful writing, deepen comprehension and encourage critical thinking. 

• Design and Technology: Towards the end of the year, pupils design and create their own tote bags, applying practical skills, creativity and problem‑solving while following the full design process from planning to evaluation. 

• Computing: Children explore the digital world, developing key skills such as online safety, digital creativity and responsible use of technology in preparation for secondary school. 

Alongside developing reading, writing and maths skills to the expected standard and beyond in preparation for the national SATs, pupils are encouraged to become scientists, historians, explorers, designers, engineers, athletes, artists and musicians. Our aim is to nurture their love of learning across all subjects while supporting them to take increasing responsibility for their progress by taking risks, identifying strengths and recognising areas for development. 

As part of our wider personal development curriculum, pupils also engage in activities that develop social responsibility, empathy and citizenship. This year, our chosen charity focus is: Porchlight 

All learning is planned in line with the National Curriculum for England, ensuring that statutory programmes of study and attainment targets for Key Stage 2 are fully met. Reading, spelling and mental maths form the basis of our weekly home learning. All children have access to the following apps: Spelling Shed, Edshed and Times Table Rock Stars, which they are expected to use regularly.

Reading to and with your child is a perfect way to support their development in learning. It can be range from a cosy sit down with a book or reading everything you find in a supermarket.
