Welcome to Year 5

In Year 5, pupils are supported to further develop independence, resilience and responsibility for their learning as they move into Upper Key Stage 2. Teaching is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections between previous learning and new concepts. Regular retrieval practice is used to strengthen long‑term memory and deepen understanding across the curriculum.

We look forward to working in partnership with families and welcoming you into our Year 5 classes.

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum continues to promote a positive learning culture and growth mindset, encouraging pupils to approach challenges with curiosity, determination and confidence. Through engaging and purposeful learning experiences, children are supported to develop their knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all subject areas, fostering a genuine love of learning.

In Year 5, pupils study a broad and balanced range of curriculum content that prepares them for the increased expectations of Year 6 and the transition to secondary school. This year’s topics will include:

  •  English – In year 5 the children will read a range of brilliant texts that will engage and interest them. Texts such as ‘Street Child’ and ‘Odysseus’ have links to other curriculum areas like history. The children will gain some incredible new vocabulary from challenging texts like ‘The Call of the wild’. Themes such as friendship and kindness show up throughout the books but specifically in ‘Holes’ and ‘Boy at the Back of the Class’. The children will gain knowledge of new SPaG techniques to help their writing shine.
  • History – The children will look at three periods of history this year. They will continue to enhance their knowledge of the Vikings Assessing whether they were simply raiders or traders or whether they may have more to them. They will dive into the life of a Tudor and discuss what it would be like to live in Tudor England. The Children will be transported into ancient Greece; they will explore Greek Gods and Goddesses and talk about the impact these had.
  • Geography – In year 5 the children will explore the importance of oceans and why they are so important to us. They will look at the Alps, and the kinds of activities people do when visiting them. They will also spend time discussing different types of deserts and whether they would like to live there.
  • Art – The Children will look at artists that use various styles of creating art. They will look at ink and print and how to create movement with this skill. They will also look at various ways to create a portrait and how this can impact the viewing of it. Finally, they will look at sculptures and how 3D art can be made.
  • Science – Children will develop their understanding of working scientifically through practical investigations by applying their knowledge of materials, space, forces and living organisms in their environments. They will develop their exploration of the physical world by using fieldwork and identification and classification. They will be taught to use sensors to monitor variables and use media to capture changes over time.
  • DT – In DT the children will use motors to create doodlers based on their designs and product criteria. They will also look at gears, pulleys and cams and discuss the usage and impact of these in everyday life.  They will also analyse and compare different bridge designs and look in to how to build scale models.

Throughout the year, we continue to foster pupils’ work ethic and capacity for independent learning, supporting them to take ownership of their progress and develop the study habits needed for future success. These skills also help prepare pupils for the demands of Year 6 and the national SATs.

All learning is planned in line with the National Curriculum for England, ensuring that statutory programmes of study and attainment targets for Key Stage 2 are fully met. Further details can be found in our Year 5 Curriculum Summary, which outlines the key knowledge and skills taught across the year.

As part of our wider personal development curriculum, pupils also engage in activities that develop social responsibility, empathy and citizenship. This year, our chosen charity focus is: Young Minds.

Home Learning

Children will be given home learning each week on a Friday to hand in the following Wednesday. They will be given one piece of maths, one piece of Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling and will need to read their Accelerator reading book regularly. This is so they can complete the quizzes on them in class-reading as many words so that they can receive their reading awards.

Times Tables

Children have a login to practice their times tables using an online program. We compete against Dickens Class in Year 5, our rivals, in a friendly manner!
