Welcome to Year 3
Year 3 is an exciting year, offering a broad and balanced range of curriculum content that encourages pupils to broaden their thinking. Across the year, children study a variety of interesting and meaningful texts and develop habits and routines of learning which will support their journey through KS2.
We look forward to working in partnership with families and welcoming you into our Year 3 classes.

Curriculum Overview
In Year 3, pupils are supported to develop increasing independence and responsibility for their learning as they transition from Key Stage 1 into Key Stage 2. Teaching is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections between what they already know and new learning. Regular retrieval practice is used to strengthen long‑term memory and deepen understanding across the curriculum.
Our curriculum is designed to promote a positive learning culture and growth mindset, encouraging pupils to approach challenges with resilience, curiosity and confidence. Through engaging and purposeful learning experiences, children are supported to develop their knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all subject areas, fostering a genuine love of learning.
To enrich learning further, pupils strengthen their practical learning through experiments, the use of manipulatives in maths and active Kagan strategies to support their developing minds. These opportunities allow them to combine academic learning with hands‑on, practical experiences. These opportunities help children apply their knowledge in real‑world contexts and develop confidence, collaboration and problem‑solving skills.
Throughout Year 3, we continue to build on the strong foundations established in EYFS and Key Stage 1, while preparing pupils for the increased expectations and progression into Year 4. A focus on fluency, accuracy and confidence ensures that core skills are securely embedded and ready to be developed further.
All learning is planned in line with the National Curriculum for England, ensuring that statutory programmes of study and attainment targets for Key Stage 2 are fully met. Further details can be found in our Year 3 Curriculum Summary, which outlines the key knowledge and skills taught across the year.
As part of our wider personal development curriculum, pupils also engage in activities that develop social responsibility and citizenship.
